Domen Zavrl
This is the blog of Domen Zavrl, real asset investment specialist, who has wide-ranging experience in the fields of real estate development, international business, commodities trading, business brokerage, natural resources, securitisations and structured financing. This blog will explore a various aspects of Mr Zavrl’s personal interests and professional life, including post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and commodities trading.
Education & Research
Mr Zavrl is fluent in English, French, German and Italian. He holds two PhDs, which he was awarded in 2003 and 2010, from Klagenfurt, Austria, and the University of Maribor, Slovenia, respectively. He has also studied at Dartmouth University’s Tuck School of Business and successfully undertaken several cryptography courses at Stanford University, US. During his career he has held several important positions, including shadow minister of finance for Slovenia from 2003 to 2004 and principal of MBB ISTA from 2006 to 2007. Today, Mr Zavrl is director of Framingham Asset Management, a role he has held since 2011.
As well as having had a number of papers published in refereed journals, Mr Zavrl has had many papers published as part of conference proceedings. The latter includes papers entitled ‘Support Systems for Macroeconomic Policy Making: Preventing Financial Crisis – an Illustrative Example’, ‘A System Dynamics Model of the Greek Crisis: The Debt Trap and The Way Forward’ and ‘Control Tools in Non-Linear Systems: Economy at the Edge of Chaos.’
Cryptography
Mr Zavrl has a keen interest in cryptography, including post-quantum cryptography. PQC aims to protect against the looming threat posed by quantum computers – these machines are currently still in development but are likely to revolutionise computing in the near future. New algorithms will be needed, as the ones currently used to protect sensitive or valuable digital data will likely be easy for a quantum computer to crack.
Commodities Trading
Having extensive experience in the world of commodities trading, Mr Zavrl is well versed in buying, selling and trading these products on a large scale on the financial markets. The price of commodities are affected by factors including global weather conditions, supply and demand, changes in government policy and geopolitical events.
Hobbies & Interests
To relax, Mr Zavrl enjoys a diverse range of hobbies, including whitewater kayaking and winter hiking, and has a long-standing interest in education, particularly Ivy League universities. The Ivy League is a collegiate athletic conference of eight northeastern United States private research universities; these are Columbia University, Brown University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, University of Pennsylvania, Harvard University, Yale University and Princeton University. At times, they have been referred to as the ‘Ancient Eight’.
